Background of the Study
Literary criticism in Nigeria is an evolving field where reviews play a crucial role in shaping public perception of literature. Syntactic coherence—reflected in the clarity and logical flow of sentences—is a key factor in the effectiveness of these critiques (Eze, 2023). This study examines syntactic coherence in Nigerian literary reviews, comparing how different critics structure their arguments and analyses. Reviews in print and digital media exhibit varied syntactic patterns that influence readability and persuasive power. The research analyzes a corpus of reviews from major Nigerian newspapers and literary blogs to identify common syntactic strategies, such as the use of subordinate clauses, parallel structures, and transitional devices. It further investigates how syntactic choices affect the interpretation of literary texts and the critical reception of works. The study also considers the impact of cultural and educational backgrounds on reviewers’ syntactic preferences, offering insights into the broader dynamics of literary discourse in Nigeria (Ibrahim, 2025; Adebayo, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
Although syntactic coherence is essential for effective literary criticism, there is limited research on its role in Nigerian literary reviews. Variability in syntactic structures can lead to ambiguity and affect the persuasive quality of a review, potentially influencing public opinion about literary works (Eze, 2023). This gap restricts our understanding of how reviewers can optimize their language to convey clear and compelling arguments. Inconsistencies in syntactic coherence may also reflect broader educational and cultural factors that impact literary discourse in Nigeria (Adebayo, 2024). This study seeks to address these issues by systematically analyzing the syntactic patterns in literary reviews and assessing their effect on critical interpretation and reader engagement (Ibrahim, 2025).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To analyze syntactic structures in Nigerian literary reviews.

  2. To evaluate the impact of syntactic coherence on critical interpretation.

  3. To recommend strategies for enhancing syntactic clarity in literary criticism.

Research Questions:

  1. What are the common syntactic patterns in Nigerian literary reviews?

  2. How does syntactic coherence affect reader understanding?

  3. What strategies can improve syntactic clarity in literary criticism?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it illuminates the role of syntactic coherence in Nigerian literary criticism, contributing to improved clarity and effectiveness in cultural discourse. The findings will aid literary critics, educators, and scholars in developing clearer communication practices and enhancing the impact of literary reviews (Ibrahim, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to literary reviews published in selected Nigerian media and does not extend to academic critiques or non-printed formats.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Syntactic Coherence: Logical and orderly sentence structure that aids understanding.

  • Literary Criticism: Analysis and evaluation of literary works.

  • Reviews: Critiques published in media assessing literary texts.
